Silly me.

This morning, I set the alarm for 7, got up rode 15 miles, felt good about myself, went to work from 9 to 2, got a great deal done, felt good about myself, decided to take 3 hours of comp time off to do needful things, mowed the lawn, shopped for an adapter for the GPS, came home, made delicious lentil/onion soup, felt good about myself, was just sitting down to the computer to do some reading of the news and catch up on my blog, when the phone rang. It was 3:40. In pit of my brain, I felt something twitching. It did not make me feel good about myself. I went to the phone, and the caller id said "U.S. Government" with one of our phone numbers. I knew right then I was supposed to work the 4-midnight shift. That little twitchy thing was giggling. I picked it up, and the same guy who signed my leave slip to leave exactly one hour and forty minutes earlier, asked, "Hey, Brian, did you remember your shift at 4?" "I do now! I'll be there in a few minutes." Fortunately, living in Morristown, I can say "be there in a few minutes" and mean it. So in less than 7 minutes I was there. I told Cindy what was happening and she promised to baby sit the delicious lentil/onion soup and bring it later, bless her heart. I walked in to the office and everyone was laughing. I'm sure out of sympathy, since every single shift worker has done this in his or her life.

I then realized that, instead of burning 3 hours of comp time this afternoon, I actually EARNED 5 hours this morning, and I felt good about myself.

Even when I'm NOT working I'm working.

Rode 15 miles this morning so I would feel good about myself, made it to 1,744 miles from home,

All shift workers have done it. One time, Terry and I showed up for a midnight shift together. "One of us is wrong", said he. One look at the schedule showed I started mids the next night. And I had gotten a good sleep before, too. So I stayed up all night and watched old sci fi movies.
